For engineering teams

Party games for engineering teams

Prompts about code review, git history and the deploy you shouldn’t have done on a Friday, in Merge Conflict, the engineering edition of Double Booked. It runs in a browser tab next to your editor. Start a party from this page and the Dev Life pack is already on.

What the Engineering setting adds

  • The Dev Life pack

Code review, the build, the on-call phone, the utils folder and the TODO from before anyone here was hired.

  • The rest of the show still plays

Engineering is all four packs: Dev Life with Work Life, Everyday and Now With AI. The mix stays broad, so nobody needs a computer science degree to follow every round.

  • Mixed team? Keep Any team

If PMs, designers or recruiters are on the call, Any team (Double Booked) keeps every joke one they get. You can switch in the lobby until the moment you press Start.

  • All-in on Dev Life

Under Customize, switch off the other packs and play Dev Life alone. At least one pack always stays on.

  • Runs next to your editor

Idle screens sit still and hidden tabs stop animating, so the game barely registers next to your IDE, a build and a video call.

  • A rubber duck hosts

Patch is named for rubber duck debugging. He explains the rules, so you don’t have to.

A taste of Dev Life

Six real prompts from the Dev Life pack. Two players answer each one, and the room votes.

  • Dev Life

A code review comment that’s technically polite and absolutely devastating

  • Dev Life

The real reason the build is red

  • Dev Life

Why the tests pass on your machine and nowhere else

  • Dev Life

The worst thing to say out loud while screen-sharing a live demo

  • Dev Life

What the CI pipeline is actually doing for those 40 minutes

  • Dev Life

A “temporary” fix that’s been in production for six years

When engineering teams play it

  • Retro opener

It’s easier to talk about what went wrong after you’ve voted on “A creative explanation for why velocity dropped this sprint.”

  • Standup icebreaker

A Short game takes about six minutes. Play it before updates and everyone is awake for them.

  • Release party

The ticket is closed and the pager is quiet. Keep the call open and play a Standard game.

  • New-engineer welcome

Ten minutes of laughing at the same stack traces tells a new hire more about the team than the wiki does.

Questions

What are good games for software engineers?

Ones that start fast and don’t need a download. Merge Conflict is the engineering edition of Double Booked, the funniest-answer game: the whole team answers prompts about code review, builds and on-call, then votes on the funniest answers.

How do I switch on Dev Life?

Start a party from this page and it’s already on. Or, in any lobby, set “Prompts for” to Engineering. You can change it until the game starts.

Do my non-engineer teammates get left out?

Not unless you want them to. Engineering keeps Work Life, Everyday and Now With AI alongside Dev Life. For a mixed call, leave “Prompts for” on Any team.

Is there a standup-sized game?

Yes. Choose Short and the game takes about six minutes: one round and the final.

Ready when you are.

Start a party. It takes about 30 seconds.
