Word sources notice =================== On Call accepts far more words than it ever offers. Besides words.txt (SCOWL up to size 70, see scowl-notice.txt), these data files hold words that only ANSWER; AutoComplete, the bots and the letters on the pager never draw from them: words-extra.txt.gz English: SCOWL 2020.12.07 (sizes up to 95), SCOWL rel-2026.02.25 (size 80), ENABLE2K and the Moby word lists lang/es.txt.gz Spanish (RLA-ES, tri-licensed MPL 1.1 / LGPL 3 / GPL 3: used here under MPL 1.1 and LGPL 3) lang/fr.txt.gz French (Grammalecte / Dicollecte, MPL 2.0) lang/de.txt.gz German (the German Wiktionary through Wiktextract, CC BY-SA 4.0) lang/pt.txt.gz Portuguese, Brazilian spelling (VERO, LGPL 3 / MPL) lang/it.txt.gz Italian (Morph-it!, CC BY-SA 2.0 / LGPL) lang/nl.txt.gz Dutch (OpenTaal, Revised BSD or CC BY 3.0) ldnoobw/*.txt the profanity terms every list is checked against (LDNOOBW, CC BY 4.0) lexicon-modern.txt OUR OWN: modern words the lists above lack (vlog, wifi, hitman...); always on scripts/ingest-dictionary-sources.mjs made them. They are MODIFIED copies: Hunspell dictionaries were expanded into word forms (scripts/lib/unmunch.mjs), only plain lowercase words were kept and accents were stripped to a-z (the game types a-z), proper names, abbreviations, hyphenated and spaced entries were dropped, so were words that a team would not want on a shared call (the family filter, excluded.txt, LDNOOBW and a reviewed list of crude word stems), words an enabled-by-default English list already has were taken out of the language lists, and each list was sorted. Each file is a separate data file: its source's licence applies to that file only, never to the program that reads it. Nothing in them reaches a browser; they are read by the server alone. 1. SCOWL (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists), Kevin Atkinson, http://wordlist.aspell.net/ - SCOWL 2020.12.07, the last SCOWLv1 release (https://sourceforge.net/projects/wordlist/files/SCOWL/2020.12.07/): the english, american, british, canadian and australian word lists and their variants up to size 95. Its Copyright file is the one reproduced in scowl-notice.txt, except that it says "2000-2018". That notice also covers the Moby word lists (Grady Ward, public domain), which size 95 includes, and the UK Advanced Cryptics Dictionary, whose copyright notice must be shown: it is in scowl-notice.txt. - SCOWL rel-2026.02.25 (SCOWLv2, https://github.com/en-wl/wordlist/releases/tag/rel-2026.02.25), word list of size 80, all spellings, accents stripped. Its Copyright file follows, verbatim. Copyright 2000-2026 by Kevin Atkinson Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute, and sell any part of SCOWLv2, or word lists created from it, is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above copyright notice appears in all copies and that both the above copyright notice and this notice appear in supporting documentation. Kevin Atkinson makes no representations about the suitability of this database for any purpose. It is provided "as is" without express or implied warranty. SCOWL is derived from many sources, most of which are in the Public Domain. Data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) was also used. All data from COCA comes from 3-gram data that is not freely available; however, the usage is within the rights given by the NDA that was signed when purchasing the data. More information on COCA is available at https://www.english-corpora.org/coca/. The primary source of words for SCOWL comes from 12dicts and ENABLE2K. Both are in the Public Domain, but Alan Beale deserves special credit as he is the author of 12dicts and a major contributor to ENABLE2K. In addition, he gave me an incredible amount of feedback and created a number of special lists in order to help improve the overall quality of SCOWL. === If you are using an official speller dictionary created by SCOWL that is not Australian English, then no additional copyright applies and including the notice before the === is sufficient. If you are using the Australian English dictionary or a wordlist that uses the 'D' SPELLING code and/or the 'AU' REGION code, the copyright after '=== AU' applies. If you are using a generated word list larger than 80, the copyright after '=== UKACD' applies. If you are distributing the SCOWLv2 database or results from the SCOWL database that is not a speller dictionary or generated word list, then both copyrights may apply depending on the parts you use. In addition, the WordNet copyright MIGHT apply as WordNet was one of many sources used for the initial POS assignment. === AU The initial information for Australian English comes from Benjamin Titze: Copyright 2016 by Benjamin Titze Permission to use, copy, modify, distribute and sell this array, the associated software, and its documentation for any purpose is hereby granted without fee, provided that the above copyright notice appears in all copies and that both that copyright notice and this permission notice appear in supporting documentation. GNU Lesser General Public License 3 and the Mozilla Public License (user's choice). Derived forms such as -issimo, -zinho and prefixed forms were left out. Portugal's spelling differences are only partly covered. 8. The Moby language lists (Project Gutenberg #3206, public domain) were looked at and NOT used: their accents are stored as untranslatable backslash codes. Languages left out for lack of a clean, complete source: none of the six asked for; Portuguese (Portugal) and German are the thinnest.
